Autumn: an appreciation.

Post by oak »

When I was a boy I loved, appropriately enough, spring and summer.

Now that I'm a man, I'd like to think of fall as the season of a thinking man.

Two pieces of culture speak to my sense of melancholy (the jazz standard "Autumn Leaves") and sophistication (black peacoats).

This iconic performance, by Mr. Tony Bennett, really captures it: melancholy, the good kind.

Regret, mixed with gratitude, of what was lost from the summer. A bittersweet remembrance.

Meanwhile, we know from Hallmark movies that fall is a natural time to fall in love, so a man should be out in his peacoat: a man is meant to be seen. I swear I immediately carry myself differently when wearing black shoes, khakis, and a black coat. A double breasted coat, with a bit of a skirt, so it flaps, just so, in the wind.

The look of a man, for a man's season.
